1001 MILES

West Carry Pond Shelter 12.6 miles

Total mileage 1001

I had my last night at John and Patti’s last night. They were unbelievably generous. I am so thankful for all of their help and am feeling so blessed. Thanks again you two!

John dropped me back off at the trail this morning with my pack full with five days of food. I hate carrying that much food. It puts my pack weight close to 25lbs and that is a bit to heavy for me. I definitely knew it was back there especially after the last four days of slackpacking.

I was up on top of Little Bigelow Mountain by 10 am and it was pretty hazy out so I didn’t take many pictures.

I arrived at camp just a little after 4 pm and I was so happy to be done for the day. My back was sore as well as my feet.

The arrow above was one of the peaks that I climbed in the past few days.

When I walked up to the shelter there was a trail Angel there with cookies and apples for the hikers. 🤗

It’s hard to believe that I have hiked over 1000 miles! I have some unbelievable leg muscles and strength! The time has gone by pretty quickly.

  1. WOW, OH WOW! You have truly covered SO MANY MILES!! And I can totally identify with how heavy 5 days’ worth of food is. I have been training with my loaded pack, but only about 1 day’s worth of food in it. I just now packed up 5 days’ worth for starting out next week on the AT, and, after holding the bag of food my hands, I’m seriously considering going on a diet. 🙂 No, I do understand we need our nutrition and calories, but it’s gonna hurt getting used to all that! As you have experienced over and over during the past 3 months.

As I do my final preparations for beginning my SOBO half out of Harpers Ferry next Tuesday, I keep thinking about all that I have read and seen and learned on your blog. You have really been an inspiration, especially how you have kept on going even when the going gets tough. No, you don’t have to like it, and yes, tears are totally acceptable, but you continue to get to your next shelter/campsite/hostel/hotel. Day after day. And look how far it has taken you! NEARLY HALF WAY DONE!!!! And nearly done with what has got to be the toughest half.

Let’s hope the trail gods and all the ups and downs and roots and rocks between WV and GA are kind to both of us.

    You go, Little Deer!

    1. Hey CHOCOHOLIC,
Best of luck to you on your journey. I hope it all goes well for you. I hope to be continuing south on Aug 9th. You’ll have to leave me notes in the shelter logs. Do you plan to blog while you are on the trail?
